TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
June 20, 2007, Town Hall
- Call to Order
Chairman Bob Leone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Board members present were Andy Abello, Jim Beam, Bob
Leone, Chris Riser and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Janet Blevins, Faith Coakley, Janet Heyer and John
Markowski.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes:
There were no corrections or additions.
- Next meeting:
September 197, 2007
- Summer Work:
- Review Bylaws/Management Plan: Bob Leone will review these and they will be discussed in the fall.
- New Schmid Sign: Joe McSwain has volunteered to rout the sign for the Middle Road field.
- River~Link Trail Construction: Flagging will be done this summer.
- Comp. Plan Description: Bob Leone will write a half page on the Schmid Preserve for the Comprehensive
Plan.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
- Schmid Account:
In Jo Cameron's absence, Bob Leone reported that the budget for the Schmid
Preserve was approved by the voters. It was brought up at the Town Meeting that there was a Schmid
trust fund account with a balance of $324.20 probably from the original logging operations. Bob Leone
will ask Claudia for her recommendation on the disposition of the account.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- Church/Lallis Update:
The Selectmen have given the Boothbay Regional Land Trust permission
to begin laying out the trail on the Lallis property. Bob Leone will walk the boundaries with BBRLT
- River~Link Planning:
The Board will work on a trail from the north end of the preserve to
Dodge Point.
- Boundary Maintenance:
David Tonry will continue to work on the plan he has outlined.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Fall Newsletter:
Photos and articles were solicited from the Board members. An article and
map on River~Link planning was suggested as well as an article on Dan McAuley and preservation of the
woodcock habitat.
- Dan McAuley Follow-up:
Andy Abello will invite McAuley to visit the preserve this summer in
preparation for a demonstration in late fall on preparing a woodcock habitat.
- Mowing:
A bill for mowing has been received from Barry Hathorne. In view of rising costs,
the Board will decide whether it would be advantageous to put the work out to bid. They will also
investigate whether they are obligated to solicit bids.
- Bob Brown Parking Lot:
Bob Leone reported on vandalism at the parking lot, i.e. trash,
brochures thrown around, and the plexi-glass on map and brochure boxes broken. He asked members to drive
into the parking lot if driving by a night. The Sheriff's office will be asked to patrol occasionally.
- Trails - Jim Beam
- Summary of Trail Patrolling:
Six people worked on the trails on May 20.
- Workday Saturday morning, June 23 for mowing/brushing/blazing:
Volunteers will meet at Old
County Road at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 to mow and blaze trails.
- Other Business
Bob Leone will continue to remind Stuart Smith to contact the attorney who will work on clearing up the liens on
the Lallis property.
- Public Input and Comment
Faith Coakley suggested asking Jo Cameron to solicit photos for the newsletter in her column. Deb Sondergaard will
contact Jo.
