TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

May 17, 2006, Town Hall

  1. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bob Leone. Committee members present were Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, Chris Riser and David Tonry. Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard were absent. Also present was Betty Twarog. There was no public input.
  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
    2. Next meeting: June 21. There will be no meetings in July and August.
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
    1. Town Meeting - May 20: Bob Leone will speak on the Schmid-related warrants.
    2. Review of Warrants: The Schmid Preserve Committee has two warrant articles, a budget request for $1,000 and a carryover of $50, and a request to extend the Haselton loan. Bob Leone will explain the plan for paying off the remaining balance of $4900: a donor is contributing $2450 in matching funds and the committee will solicit donations in that amount. More than $700 has been raised to date. Jo Cameron suggested having a table at Town Meeting to solicit funds.
  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. Haselton Fund-raising: Bob Leone said he and Deb Sondergaard will be writing to prospective donors.
    2. Church/Lallis: Bob Leone said there was nothing new regarding the exchange of properties. The Church property is now owned by the BBRLT and has been surveyed. The visit by committee members to the structure on the property was cancelled; the BBRLT will either find a use for the building or will burn it. Jo Cameron said that David Clifford had come into the office with a survey map that showed he had 11-13 acres which are not indicated on the tax map. He would be willing to trade acreage near the Lallis line for some of the Zak acreage. Bob Leone said that the Lallis property and Zak Preserve touch at a point and there is some dispute about whether Clifford owns land in that location.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Annual Newsletter: Publication of the newsletter will be postponed until September when there will be an update on the Church/Lallis exchange, closing of the road for hunting season, payoff of the Haselton loan and potential news on River~Link. David Tonry suggested that a list of donors for the matching funds be placed on the kiosk
    2. National Trails Day - June 3: A guided hike in the preserve will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 3. Deb Sondergaard will write a press release for the newspapers. Participants will meet at the Middle Road parking lot.
    3. Kiosk Construction: Chris Riser reported that the Wiscasset students were unable to build a kiosk this spring, but they will be approached again in the fall.
  6. Trails - Jim Beam
    1. Outing Club Worktrip: The Wiscasset Outing club has scheduled a work trip for Sunday, June 4, to blaze trails and replace posts which have disappeared. The Boothbay Outing Club will be asked to participate. A barbeque will follow in the Haggett Field. Committee members will be advised of the time.
    2. Foundations: Deb Sondergaard has been cleaning out the brush around the old foundations and would like to see this continued. Bob Leone suggested putting a photo on metal showing how the houses looked in the past.
    3. Meadow Brook Bridge: Work on the approach to the bridge and railing will be done this summer.
  7. Other Business

Jo Cameron provided information from the Sagadahoc Region Rural Resource Initiative which could be used as a model or resource for cooperation between towns on shared preserve property. Bob Leone said that there is a lot of interest in hiking in Midcoast preserves from people in the Portland area. Methods of publicizing the preserve were discussed, such as working in cooperation with the BBRLT and DRA, the guide or articles by Paula Roberts of the Lincoln County News, the Coastal Journal and the Press Herald seasonal supplements.

Jo Cameron said she had material on grants sent to her by Congressman Allen which the committee members were welcome to review at her house (as she is using them for the Fort Edgecomb bicentennial). Bob Leone said that aside from the Haselton fund-raising, there was no immediate need for a grant. When the Church property is available, if money is needed to build a parking lot on McKay Road, funds will be sought from LFMF. Jo Cameron also suggested a grant for a botanist to label trees and plants.
