TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

January 19, 2005, Town Hall

  1. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 7:05 p.m. Committee members present were Andrew Abello, Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Janet Blevins, Faith Coakley, John Markowski and Betty Twarog. There was no public comment.
  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: There were no additions or corrections
    2. Next meeting: February 18, 2005
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
    1. Budget Status: There is $710 remaining until June 30th. The budget was discussed and the chairman recommended asking the Budget Committee for $1,000 as a short term measure. There was no objection from the members. In the long run he said he hoped an endowment fund could be created from bequests to the preserve, the income from which could be used for operating funds. This will be publicized in the spring newsletter. Other groups such as the Boothbay Land Trust and Damariscotta River Association may be contacted for fundraising ideas. A draft budget will be presented at the next meeting.
  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. Draft project agreement: Surran Pyne has all the necessary documents and she and Kathy Eichenberg continue to work toward getting the agreement signed. When the agreement is finalized, Land for Maine's Future grant of $31,796 to the Town will be used to repay the Woods End Fund. A grant for the balance of $4,900 has been applied for.
    2. Glenice Church Property: There has been no positive movement on this matter and it is still under discussion.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Mowing: Barry Hathorne has been paid for the mowing which concludes the two-year cycle and a check from the Department of Agriculture should be forthcoming.
  6. Trails - Jim Beam
    1. Bridge Construction: Sunday, January 30, or Sunday, February 13, were tentatively scheduled to work on the bridge. The wood can be brought in by Matt Jones' snowmobile if there is enough snow. He will be contacted to see if he is available on either of those days.
  7. Other Business

Jo Cameron said she had been contacted by L. Ross Merrow who was looking for the location of Ross Field, site of a slaughter of women and children by Indians in the 1740s, and asked if anyone knew of it.

Jo requested the use of the field by the Middle Road entrance to the preserve for a one-day event to be held by the Friends of Fort Edgecomb in 2008. A play day with colonial-era games and sports or a picnic with period food was being considered. There were no objections from the committee members.

Steve Peters has indicated his schedule will not allow him to become a committee member, but he will continue to join work parties when possible.
