TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
September 15, 2004, Town HallL
- The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:00 p.m. Committee members present were Jo Cameron,
Bob Leone, and Deborah Sondergaard. A quorum was not present and no action was taken. Also present were Janet
Blevins, Faith Coakley, Barry Hathorne, John Markowski and Betty Twarog. There was favorable comment from the public
on the new sign.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes: The cost of insurance (in 3.a) was changed from $375 to $3.75 and the spelling of Curt
Crosby’s name (in 5.c) was corrected.
- Next meeting: October 20, 2004
- River~Link, LFMF: Bob Leone will meet with the Selectmen on September 27 regarding River~Link and possible
acquisitions in Edgecomb. The 100-acre property owned by Glenis Church and her sister is being appraised and Bob
Leone believes there will be River~Link money to purchase it. If acquired, the property could be managed as the
Schmid Preserve. If it were to be owned by the Town of Edgecomb, the Boothbay Land Trust would hold a
development rights easement. He said that there are other properties which may become available: Land which had
recently been taken for taxes and the Carfizzi property which is for sale.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
- Reappointments: The terms of Andy Abello and Dick Oulton are expiring this year. Andy is willing to serve for
another year, but a replacement must be found for Dick. Possible replacements may come from the volunteer survey
Deborah Sondergaard is taking.
- Insurance: MMA advises of new blanket insurance coverage for volunteers at $3.75 per person per year. Volunteers
must be named and vacancies must be listed. Volunteers are covered while participating in a volunteer activity
sponsored by the municipality or traveling with a group or to and from the volunteer activity.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- Draft Project Agreement: The DOC and IF&W have an agreement but Schmid has not yet been contacted by
them.
- Church Property: The Chairman asked the board to consider, if the property is acquired, whether the Town wants to
own it with a development easement to Booth Bay Land Trust, and does the Schmid Committee want to manage it as
part of the preserve, with possibly a parking area and trail access. He will discuss the matter with the
Selectmen.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Kiosk Construction: The chairman reported that a new kiosk had been erected at the end of Old County Road with
materials donated by Poole Bros. It has a map, brochure boxes, and management guidelines and a plastic box will be
installed for a hikers’ registry.
- New Signs: A new sign has been installed at Middle Road and it is hoped that Curt Crosby will put up a sign in the
field after the mowing is completed. Bob Leone will review the list of signs to see what is still needed. The
suggestion was made to put a sign on Route 1 or Route 27, but it was felt that the preserve should be kept small and
a balance between hunters and hikers maintained.
- Mowing: Barry Hathorne will mow in a week or two, and if he needs help, he will contact Bob Leone.
- Volunteer List: Deborah Sondergaard has sent out a letter to volunteers in order to update the mailing list and to list
jobs that are available. She will also put a notice in the paper.
- Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
- Summer Maintenance: The chairman reported that he had done some mowing during the summer and had opened up
the Link Trail. Deb and Catherine Braid had done some maintenance along the Dance Hall Trail. Barry Hathorne
suggested that the Gravenoid Swale be protected from horses; the trail should be narrow enough to keep the horses
on the trail. Japanese barberry and bittersweet still need to be eliminated.
- Bridge Construction: Bob Leone said that he hopes to get the bridge built this fall, now that most of the other work
has been completed. A ramp will be built to the bridge with a wide tread between steps. The bridge will be 36” to 42”
wide with railings on both sides.
- Trail Layout: No dates have been set.
- Other Business
Jo Cameron said that Fort Edgecomb is planning its bicentennial in 2008 and the grounds at the fort are too small for
large events. She asked if it would be possible to use the Haggett Field for a town picnic.
Bob Leone suggested contacting Paula Roberts, who writes the Hiking Section in the Lincoln County News, for publicity
on a special event (such as paying off the Haselton loan) or laying trails and perhaps a mention of the Poole Brothers’
donation for the kiosk.
