June 23, 2004, Town Hall

  1. The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:00 p.m. Committee members present were Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, Dick Oulton, Deborah Sondergaard, and David Tonry. Also present were Katharine Braid, Faith Coakley and Betty Twarog. There was no public input.
  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: There were changes or corrections.
    2. Next meeting: September 15, 2004
    3. RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone will contact the representative at the Department of Conservation regarding the project agreement.
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
    1. Insurance: Joe Cameron reported that MMA accident insurance is $3.75 per volunteer so a head count would be necessary. Rodd Hopper recommended holding out for a single payment bulk rate.
  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. Draft Project Agreement: The chairman will contact the Department of Conservation to ascertain if the project agreement is ready.
    2. Haselton - Final fundraising: Bob Leone will check on the funding to make sure all donations are in and that the balance remaining is only $4900. Amanda Russell will write a final fund-raising letter for the balance.
    3. Old County Road Gate: Bob Leone asked David Tonry to arrange to have someone weld the bottom hinge on gate. Jimmy Schmal was recommended by Jim Beam.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Kiosk Construction: No work has been done on this to date.
    2. Insurance Waiver: Deb Sondergaard distributed copies of a release from liability form for work parties. Jo Cameron will check with the Selectmen to see if a legal review of the form is necessary
    3. New signs: Bob Leone reported that the sign post is up at the Middle Road Parking Area and the sign will be put up as soon as it is lettered. Other signs will be worked on over the summer. Curt Crosby is working on the sign for the field.
    4. Mowing: Barry Hathorne will be contacted about mowing after August 15th.
    5. Volunteer List: Deb Sondergaard said she will send out postcards to the volunteers to see if they are still interested in working on the preserve. The various jobs will be listed so volunteers can indicate what they are interested in doing. It was suggested that a poster or flyer be put up in the post office and town hall with a phone number for prospective volunteers to call. Deb will work on this over the summer.
  6. Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
    1. Monday Night Work trips: Work trips were scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 on July 5 and 19 and August 2 and 16. Volunteers will meet at Old County Road.
  7. Other Business

The terms of Andy Abello and Dick Oulton expire on June 30 and they will have to be reappointed. Dick Oulton said he will try to get a replacement, as he is not always available, although he will help on work trips when possible.

Jim Beam asked whether the Churches’ property had been appraised. Bob Leone said he did not know whether the appraiser had gotten to them, as he had just started working in the area, but he will follow-up. The property may be part of LFMF land acquisition.

  8. Public Input and Comment

Faith Coakley commended the committee for raising money for the Haselton property. Thanks also go to Amanda Russell for her efforts.

Katharine Braid asked what the plans were for the bridge. Bob Leone told her that plans call for a 30-foot wide bridge with a railing on one side. Ms. Braid said that the visual impact of rails on both sides of the bridge would make it easier to take horses across.

The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
