TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
February 18, 2004, Town Hall
- The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:05 p.m. Committee members present were Jim Beam, Jo
Cameron, Bob Leone, Dick Oulton, and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Janet Blevins, Faith Coakley, John
Markowski, and Betty Twarog. There was no public input.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
- Next meeting: March 17, 2004
- RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone reported that a RiverLink meeting would be held on February 27 at 8:30 a.m. to discuss
appraisal priorities, a matching bank, the proposed agreement and proposed management agreement among the
parties. RiverLink received $400,000 for Phase II. Regarding easements brought up at the previous meeting, Jo
Cameron said according to Mark DesMeules there were 30 easements in Phase I, but purchases were preferred
since easements were not forever.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
- Budget Status Jo Cameron reported that as of 12/31/03 the balance was $1,387.39. Expenses to date were $362.61.
- 2004 Budget: Bob Leone presented the 2004 budget of $1,550, which is $200 less than the previous year. He
estimated that $735 would be left from the 2003 budget. The committee discussed raising money from the donation
boxes or grants, establishing an endowment, or by asking the Town for money. Bob Leone said he would talk to the
absent members and to the Budget Committee, and the matter will be on the agenda for the next meeting.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- Haselton walk-through: This was tentatively scheduled for March 6th at 8:30. Volunteers will meet at Town Hall and
the walk is expected to take about four hours.
- Snow plowing of the Bob Brown Parking Lot: Bob Leone reported that the lot has been plowed and sanded.
- Proposed adjacent development: Bob Leone reported that a realtor representing WTS Realty, owner of 102 acres
abutting the southeast corner of the Schmid preserve, had requested a meeting with the Selectmen regarding the
status of Mt. Hunger Road East. The road has been discontinued and the committee would prefer it to remain as is.
The land reportedly is on the market for $150,000. Bob Leone said he would bring the possible availability of the
parcel to the attention of RiverLink.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
- Winter trail pruning: This workday has been postponed.
- Other Business
Jo Cameron said that according to MMA, under the Town’s policy, volunteers working as the Town’s agents are
protected from liability suits but not for injuries incurred. MMA is sending information on a rider that could provide
additional coverage. It was suggested that Jo ask about event insurance and contact Coastal Maine Botanical
Gardens to see how they handle insurance for volunteers Bob Leone said he would contact DRA and SVCA.
Chewonki could also be contacted. He will also look into training workshops for chainsaw use.
Bob Leone suggested extending the preserve’s hospitality to the Chewonki Foundation, and the Maine Astronomical
Society was also mentioned as a group which might be interested in the use of the preserve.
