TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

October 15, 2003, Town Hall

The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:05 p.m. Committee members present were Andy Abello, Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone and David Tonry. Also present were Janet Blevins, Bruce Cameron and Betty Twarog. There was no public input at this time.
Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
1. Review of meeting minutes: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
2. Next meeting: November 19, 2003
3. River~Link, LFMF: Copies of all materials from the Haselton sale had been sent to Mark Desmeules in case there would be money available for some of the administrative or surveying costs from the next phase of funding from LFMF.
Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
Jo asked that the Selectmen be kept informed of policy decisions made by the committee through distribution of meeting minutes.
Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
David reported that a section of the line needs blazing and he would investigate or do the blazing in the next month. Bob Leone said that some of the boundary signs may need replacing, but left the decision to David.
Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
1. Mowing: Bob Leone will follow up with Barry Hathorne to find out when the mowing will be done.
2. Apple tree restoration/pruning workshop: The workshop will be held either October 26 or November 2 and Andy will prepare a press release. Donations from participants will be requested.
3. Sign inventory and discussion of future signage:
  1. Existing Signs:
    - Sign on gate at Mt. Hunger Rd. North will be left as is.
    - Sign in field on Middle Road will be replaced
    - Sign frames at Old County Rd. and Mt. Hunger Rd. will be removed.
    - Kiosk and sign frame at Bob Brown Parking Area will be left as is
    - “No ATV” signs at 8 locations will be left as is.
  2. Proposed Signage:
    - Bob Brown Parking Area - Bob Leone will bring samples of proposed sign
    - Roadside Sign - “Charles and Constance Schmid Land Preserve, Town of Edgecomb” possibly with “Bob Brown Parking Lot”
    - Old County Road - future site for kiosk
    - Kiosk - Needs management guidelines and map
    - Access at Mt. Hunger Rd. East - identification sign and “No ATV”
    - Middle Road Field - “Charles and Constance Schmid Land Preserve Est. 1980” sign
    - Trailheads - Trail Names (could use stencils for names on posts)
    - Haggett Field - future signage
    Bob Leone will bring samples of roadside and parking lot signs to the next meeting. David Tonry will prepare a map for the kiosk. Volunteer sign makers will be sought. Andy Abello will put up shingles on kiosk. Ideas for a visitor registration method were requested. Signage will be reviewed yearly.
4. Kiosk at Old County Road: This is a possible Eagle Scout project, or if there is no interest by the scouts, it will be a priority of the committee for next spring.
5. Trapping: Bob Leone reported that he had spoken with Mike Brown, who had been given permission to trap in the preserve, regarding concerns of the committee. Brown will be using small traps which will not harm dogs, will be trapping only for the two-week season and will not be trapping during the hunting season.
Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
1. Bridge meeting: Has not yet been held.
2. Trail flagging: A work day was scheduled for October 19, 9 - 12, for flagging and cutting.
Other Business
The problem of ATVs was discussed.

Jim Beam said that there was a steel donation box at Ovens Mouth which could be used as an example for a donation box at the kiosk.
