SCHMID PRESERVE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

June 15, 2003

The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:00 p.m. Committee members present were Bob Leone, Dick Oulton, Deborah Sondergaard, David Tonry and Jo Cameron. Also present were Donna Balducci, Gary Balducci, Faith Coakley, Barry Hathorne, Dorothy Hathorne, Hartley Hathorne, Mary Gene Myer, Ted Myer, Amanda Russell, Ted Smith, and Betty Twarog.

Public Input:

Betty Twarog commented that although the previous minutes indicated signage would be discussed at this meeting, the subject was not on the agenda. She said that a decision on signs was needed before summer, and because no meeting was scheduled for July and August, she recommended that it be discussed at this meeting. Bob Leone said that he would like to devote a meeting in the fall to a comprehensive review of signs but agreed to discuss the parking area sign under "Other Business."

  1. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
    2. Next meeting: September 17, 2003
    3. RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone said that he had signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Damariscotta River Association, Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association, and Boothbay Regional Land Trust, the partners who will receive the LFMF money. On June 17th, a total of $250,000 was awarded, of which the preserve will receive $31,700 toward the purchase of the Haselton property, leaving a balance of $4,300 which will be raised through grants. He said a management agreement with the partners will be discussed in the future. The Haselton property will be managed under the Schmid Management Plan. Maureen Hoffman and Mark DesMeules will facilitate negotiations with landowners for easements for the RiverLink project which extends from the Schmid Preserve to Dodge Point and Sherman Lake.
  2. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron

Jo Cameron said the $4,000 from the Boston Foundation had been applied to the Woodsend Landing fund loan.

  3. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry

David Tonry volunteered to help in keeping the brochure boxes filled. Approximately 60 brochures remain out of the 300 which were printed. The management policies still need to be posted on the kiosk.

As a clarification of the previous minutes, David said one-fifth of the boundaries will be marked next year.

  4. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard

A draft of the newsletter was distributed and corrections were made. Amanda Russell will take the corrected draft to the printer on Friday, June 20th.

Bob Leone said new gate locks had been installed.

  5. Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton

Bob Leone said he would like to flag two sections of trail: in the north, a ski trail connector from the Ridge Trail to the Moose Trail and also one off the Old Brook Trail.

Work nights for various projects are scheduled for July 1, 8, and 15, meeting at the parking lot at 5:30. Deb will call stewards.

Andy Abello will be the lead on the apple trees restoration which will consist of clearing around the trees as a prelude to the pruning workshop in the fall by Barry Hathorne.

  6. Other Business

Bob Leone said that he would put up a sign on the edge of the parking area indicating the Charles and Constance Schmid Land Preserve. This will be a temporary sign until a comprehensive plan is completed.

In response to Barry Hathorne's question regarding mowing this summer, Bob Leone said it should be done this year, but there are no funds at this time. Federal funds have been applied for from the Knox-Lincoln Soil Conservation agency. Barry suggested that the committee try to budget at least enough to mow the roughest areas.

  7. Public Input and Comment

Ted Smith complimented the committee on the trails and its work over the past year.

Bob Leone will check on the condition of the gates which were reported inoperable.

The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
