November 14, 2007, Town Hall
- Call to Order
Chairman Bob Leone called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. Board members present were Andy Abello, Jo Cameron, Bob
Leone, Deborah Sondergaard and David Tonry. Also present were Janet Blevins, Barry Hathorne and Betty Twarog. There
was no public input.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes:
Item 4b was changed to indicate that the boundary markers have been
painted, rather than marked. The minutes of October 17 were approved as amended.
- Next meeting:
January 16, 2008. There will be no meeting in December.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
Jo reported there had been no progress on the Lallis property lien. She will check after Thanksgiving to see if the
lien has been lifted; it is slated to expire on November 18.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- River~Link Press Conference:
Bob Leone reported on the ribbon cutting ceremony for the
River~Link trail with the governor in attendance.
- Adjacent Landowner Question:
Bob Leone reported that a forester on behalf of an abutter of
the preserve had asked if he could skid logs from a forestry operation across the Schmid preserve trails to
Old County Road. Bob had advised the abutter that it was highly unlikely that the Selectmen would give
approval, as it was not in the best interests of the preserve. He indicated to the owner that Steve Huffnagel
of the DRA might contact her regarding purchase of her land for River~Link. He said the Management Plan
indicates that the Town cannot permit a use that has a negative impact on the overall resources of the
Preserve or a negative impact on an individual resource of the Preserve. He recommended that the request
not be approved, although the ultimate decision would be left to the Selectmen.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Dan McAuley follow-up:
Andy Abello said Dan's visit had been delayed by an injury, but he
planned to visit the preserve on November 19th to survey possibilities for increasing the woodcock habitat.
Anyone wishing to accompany him should contact Andy Abello.
- Mowing:
Mowing has been completed for the year and the bill has been given to the Selectmen.
Funds have been applied for from the Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program
- Annual Newsletter:
Andy Abello gave a rough draft of the newsletter to Board members and
will email a copy of the final draft for proofing. Bob Leone will submit an article on summer maintenance.
- Trails - Jim Beam
- Work Trip:
Bob Leone said there had been a work session on November 4, cutting a section of
the River~Link trail. A work trip to cut another section of the River~Link trail was scheduled for Sunday,
December 2. Volunteers will meet at Town Hall at 9 a.m.
- Other Business
A moonlight walk will be scheduled in January.
In response to David Tonry's question, Bob Leone said the gates to the preserve have been kept closed again this
year during hunting season. Jim Beam had advised that most hunters would probably be in favor of keeping the gates
closed as hunters could tell by the number of trucks parked at the entrance how many hunters were in the preserve.
