TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

May 16, 2007, Town Hall

  1. Call to Order

    Bob Leone, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Board members present were Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, Chris Riser and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Jfanet Blevins, Faith Coakley, John Markowski and Betty Twarog. There was no public input.

  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes:
      There were no corrections or additions.
    2. Next meeting:
      June 20, 2007
    3. Summer Hiatus:
      The Board will not meet in July and August.
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
    1. Town Meeting May 19:
      Bob Leone will give a report on the Schmid Preserve and answer questions at the meeting.
  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. Church/Lallis Update:
      The Boothbay Regional Land Trust has asked the Selectmen for permission to start working on a trail on the Lallis property and the Selectmen have agreed.
    2. River~Link Planning:
      Bob Leone reported that he hopes to work this summer on the River~Link trail route through the preserve to where it will join the DRA trail.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. National Trails Day - June 2:
      Andy Abello will lead a hike on National Trails Day and will handle publicity for it. A suggested three-mile route is south from either the Middle Road parking lot or the end of Mt. Hunger Road West. Chris Riser will contact the Wiscasset High School Outing Club to see if they are interested in participating.
    2. Dan McAuley Follow-up:
      Andy Abello will contact Dan McAuley about a visit to the preserve and setting up a demonstration project in the fall. Bob Leone said that one of the fields would be the focus of the project to attract woodcock and other migratory game birds.
    3. Kiosk Spring Cleaning:
      Bob Leone reported that he had cleaned both kiosks, put up new maps and supplied brochures. He said it was impossible to drive on Old County Road from the winter parking area sign to the gate because of the mud and recommended that a warning sign be installed.
  6. Trails - Jim Beam
    1. Trail Patrolling Day - May 20:
      Volunteers will meet at Town Hall at 9 a.m. and will try to hike every trail, assessing winter damage and cleaning up as needed. Three or four volunteers with chainsaws will be needed. The volunteers may also blaze trails, weather permitting.
