TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

November 16, 2006, Town Hall

  1. Call to Order

    The chairman called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Board members present were Andy Abello, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, Deborah Sondergaard, Janet Blevins and Betty Twarog were also present. There was no public input.

  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes:
      The spelling of Mt. Hunger Road was corrected in the third paragraph under item #3 and the word "East" was deleted after Old County Road.
    2. Next meeting:
      There will be no meeting December; the next meeting will be held on January 17
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron

    Bob Leone will check with Fran or Claudia about the carryover from the previous year which did not appear on the summary of accounts given to the committee by the Selectmen.

    1. Haselton Fund-raising:
      Bob Leone reported that fund-raising letters had been sent out with a good response. Of the $2450 needed, $1540 has been received.
    2. Church/Lallis status:
      Bob Leone reported that Selectman Stuart Smith will be contacting an attorney in Portland who can assure the committee that the federal liens on the Lallis property are clear or will be able to clear them up which will allow the trade of the Lallis property for the Church property. Whether or not a lot or two can be split off from the Lallis property was discussed and the committee will look at the possibility when the title is clear.
    3. Mt. Hunger Road East Access:
      Deborah Sondergaard said the vegetation had died back and access was clear. Bob Leone is working on signs for the road.
  4. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Annual Newsletter:
      Andy Abello distributed a draft of the newsletter for review. He asked for comments from the committee by November 18 so that the newsletter can be mailed before Thanksgiving.
    2. Hiker Registers:
      Bob Leone displayed the trail registers which will be attached to the kiosk. The use of registers will enable the committee to determine who is using the preserve and whether they are local residents or from the midcoast area or other states.
    3. Field Mowing:
      Barry Hathorne has completed the mowing on both fields.
  5. Trails - Jim Beam
    1. Trail Patrolling - Sunday, November 19
      Patrolling will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and volunteers should meet at Old County Road.
    2. Meadow Brook Bridge:
      The railing on one side of the bridge and a kickboard on the other side have been installed.
  6. Other Business

    Bob Leone will contact the owner of the land abutting the right-of-way where committee members have been parking.

    Barry Johnston has left another picnic table for the preserve at Bob Leone's. Bob will try to get it to the preserve over the weekend.

    Jo Cameron said she had lost three larch trees to an obnoxious sawfly. She advised watching the larch trees as well as hemlock and oak trees in the Schmid Preserve and calling an arborist if necessary.

    Jo Cameron asked whether the Haggett field would be available for the Fort Edgecomb bicentennial activities. A children's play day, a rustic banquet and bowling on the green were mentioned as possible events. Bob Leone said the only problem might be access, as four-wheel drive vehicles would be necessary to reach the field. The Committee suggested Middle Road field because of easier access.
