- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
- Budget Status:
The balance in the Schmid account as of June 30 was
$537.78. The voters approved $1050 in June, BBRLT had donated $90 in lieu of taxes, and
$112.50 for mowing had been received from the Department of Agriculture. Jo Cameron
reported that the volunteer insurance had been renewed by MMA.
-
- Haselton Fund-raising:
Bob Leone distributed a draft of a letter to potential donors in an effort to raise $2450 which will be matched by an anonymous donor.
The amount owed to the Woodsend Fund is $4900.
- Church/Lallis Status:
According to Julie Lamy, Executive Director of the Boothbay Regional Land Trust, the house on the Church property has been burned. The BBRLT
attorneys are no long working on the IRS lien; the Selectmen and Attorney Erv Snyder will
follow up on the matter. Bill Card who works in Susan Collins' office will be contacted for
assistance.
Bob Leone will be meeting with River~Link next week regarding management money and will be
requesting $4,000 to $5,000 for a parking lot.
Jim Beam recommended that because two large pieces of land have been removed from the tax
rolls, the committee should be cautious about taking more land for the preserve. Bob
Leone said the two three-acre lots on the Lallis property would be put back on the tax
rolls. The committee discussed the goals for taking more property for the preserve and
the limit that should be put on tax-free land. The pros and cons of selling the two
Lallis lots with conservation easements were discussed.
- River~Link Update:
Bob Leone met with Steve Hufnagel of River~Link to
explore a route from the Thompson property through the Schmid Preserve. The final design of
the trailhead signs and trail markers will be available at the next River~Link meeting and
the final trail route will be determined. Access points and maintenance funds were discussed.
The Damariscotta River Association will contact Mary Ann Lauderback about the possibility of
putting a parking lot on her property at the end of Mt. Hunger Road North. Jo Cameron said
that the access from Mt. Hunger Road East needed clearing.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Annual Newsletter:
The draft of the next newsletter was discussed as
well as articles still needed. The list of last year's volunteers will be included. Photos
are needed, and Jo Cameron suggested that the Edgecomb Historical Society be contacted for
photos. A draft of the newsletter will be available at the next meeting
- Mowing Discussion:
Barry Hathorne is in the process of mowing the Middle
Road field and will also mow the Haggett field as recommended by Bob Leone. The Department of
Agriculture will be contacted to see if, because of the potential fire hazard, that agency
will reimburse the preserve for this mowing. A work party is scheduled for October 15 at
9 a.m. to clear the edges on the front part of the Middle Road field.
- Church Parking Lot:
Bob Leone will work with Jim Beam on a site for the
parking lot. Jim Beam recommended putting up "No ATV" signs. It was suggested that IF&W's
Mark Warren (an Edgecomb resident) be called to enforce the prohibition, if necessary.
- Trails - Jim Beam
- Fall Maintenance:
Maintenance will be scheduled at the next meeting.
- Meadow Brook Bridge:
At the next meeting work will be scheduled on the
Meadow Brook bridge. Bob Leone did maintenance beyond the bridge but more will need to be
done in the spring. Katharine Braid continued clearing where Bob left off. Bob Leone said
mowing would help bring birds back to the fields. Jim Beam offered to get clover seed for
the fields and Barry Hathorne volunteered his seeder.
- Other Business
Although there had been reports of rocks being taken from the preserve, Bob Leone had failed to
find any illegal entrance into the preserve.
In response to Jo Cameron's question, Bob Leone said he would get a sign for Mt. Hunger Road
East. With regard to clearing, Bob Leone will contact Deb Sondergaard about weed-whacking that
area and Barry Hathorne will mow, if possible.
