TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
November 17, 2004, Town Hall
- The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:00 p.m. Board members present were Jim Beam, Jo
Cameron, Bob Leone, and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Janet Blevins, Faith Coakley, Barry Hathorne, John
Markowski, Betty Twarog and Steve Peters, a potential new committee member. There was no public input.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes: In Section 4.a. The spelling of Surran Pyne’s name was corrected, in Section 4.b “and
selectmen” was added after “committee” in the last line, and in 4.c “possible acquisition” was substituted for “taking.”.
- Next meeting: December 15, 2004
- River~Link, LFMF: No action to report.
- New Board Member: Steve Peters was present and is considering joining the committee.
- Website Minutes: It was decided to keep the original format of the minutes on the website.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
No report.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- Draft Project Agreement: Bob Leone said that he would contact Kathy Eichenberg regarding the status of the
agreement.
- Church Property: Bob Leone said the appraisal of this property and the assessed value vary greatly and it will be
necessary to reach an agreement on the actual value of the property.
- Gate Repair: Bob Leone said the gate on old County Road was opened for the hunting season, but that it needs repair.
Jim Beam will contact a potential welder for the job.
- Snow Plowing: Bathgate and Sons will continue to plow the Bob Brown parking lot as they did last year. Chris Bertin
who plowed a part of Old County Road last year will be asked to keep the turnaround plowed.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Haselton Grant: Amanda Russell has applied for a grant from the Boston Foundation for $4900 to complete the Haselton
acquisition.
- Hunting Season: The gates were opened for the regular hunting season which ends November 27 and will remain open
until the end of the muzzle-loading season on December 12. Bob Leone reminded the members that they and future
members should be aware of the importance of hunting in the preserve and the resource it is for local hunters.
- Mowing: Barry Hathorne has mowed the field on Middle Road, the cost of which will be partly reimbursed by the Soil and
Conservation Service. Barry reported that underbrush which is encroaching on the field needs cutting back.
- Volunteer List: Deb Sondergaard said that responses to the questionnaire were still coming in. One suggestion by
Andy Burt was to hold a winter supper with a music or story-telling program to raise funds.
- Brochure Update: Another 100 brochures have been printed. The new parking area needs to be added to the map.
- Trails - Jim Beam
- Pruning Workshop: Pruning can be done anytime now through March and a pruning workshop was scheduled for
December 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. Participants will meet at Town Hall at 9 a.m. and will be asked
to bring loppers, pole saws or bow saws. The workshop will be advertised in the newspaper. Donations from participants
will be welcome.
- Bridge Construction: Work on the bridge started two weeks ago when two 24-foot stringers were cut down. They will be
winched across the stream on December 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
- Other Business
Wendy Unda has invited the chairman to walk her property with her to determine what interest the Schmid Preserve
Committee might have in access to her property for a segment of the River~Link trail.
