TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

May 19, 2004, Town Hall

  1. The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:00 p.m. Committee members present were Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, David Tonry and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Janet Blevins and Betty Twarog.
  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
    2. Next meeting: June 23, 2004 (Note: This is the fourth Wednesday)
    3. RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone reported that $31,796 for the Haselton purchase was approved unanimously by the LFMF board. Tim Glidden, LFMF staff member, has the draft project agreement which will be reviewed and sent on to the Department of Conservation. Also needed before the money is released are the deed, updated title insurance, evidence of the Town’s authority to sign the agreement and a survey, all of which have been given to Mark DesMeules. The Town Attorney will work with the DOC’s attorney on the closing details.
    4. Bob Leone will give a breakdown at Town Meeting of the amount of money that has been raised for the Haselton property, what has been received from LFMF and what still needs to be raised.
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
    1. Insurance Update: Jo Cameron reported that MMA has not come up with any bulk insurance to date. Janet Blevins contributed a release form which Deb Sondergaard will adapt for volunteer workers on the preserve.
    2. Upcoming Town Meeting: Elections will be held on Friday. A new ordinance and ordinance revisions will be on the agenda. Frank Perkins is running for Selectman.
  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. Draft Project Agreement: The chairman will contact Tim Glidden to find out when the project agreement will be sent to the Department of Conservation.
    2. Boundary marking maintenance: David Tonry said that the boundary had been divided into five sections, one of which would be marked every year beginning in 2005, although the marking could begin this year
    3. Old County Road entrance: Bob Leone reported that the gate at the Old County Road entrance was broken and needed welding. He will contact Peter Brown about the repair. The locks on the other gates will be checked. In order to keep vehicles from driving around the gate, committee members had piled brush and rocks in the opening. “No ATV” signs will be posted where the gate is broken.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Kiosk Construction: Bob Leone has removed the old frame at Old County Road and plans to start construction of the kiosk. Work trips were scheduled for May 24, June 14 and June 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 for working on the kiosk, cleaning out the culvert, raking gravel and setting the post for the new sign. On past work trips, the trails have been reblazed, and some trees had been cut.
    2. Map Brochures: Another 100 brochures have been printed for the boxes at the kiosk and for Town Meeting.
    3. New Signs: The new Middle Road parking area signs will be put up on the June work trips.
    4. June Trails Day: Deb Sondergaard will guide a hike on June 5th, National Trails Day. A hike beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Old County Road entrance and using the Haggett Loop, Fire Trail, and a return on the Dance Hall Trail was suggested. Carpooling from Town Hall was suggested. Deb will also make a poster to publicize the hike at Town Meeting, and the Boy Scouts will be notified of the hike.
