TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
April 28, 2004, Town Hall
- The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman, at 7:10 p.m. Committee members present were Andy Abello,
Jim Beam, Bob Leone, and Deborah Sondergaard. Also present were Faith Coakley, John Markowski and Betty Twarog.
Betty Twarog reported that someone had put up the old sign.
- Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
- Review of Meeting Minutes: The third sentence under 3.a. was changed to, “She reported that the Boothbay Region
Land Trust et al are insured by Chubb Insurance, Inc. through the national Land Trust Alliance, for which Schmid, as
a part of town government, is not eligible.”.
- Next meeting: May 19, 2004
- RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone reported that there were no new developments but a meeting to obligate the money
should have taken place.
- Town Report: Copies were distributed to committee members.
- Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron
- Insurance Update: No report.
- Upcoming Town Meeting: There will be a warrant article to appropriate the amount budgeted, $1,550. Another
warrant will roll over any money owed by the Schmid preserve to the Town for one more year. The Boothbay Region
Land Trust gave the Town of Edgecomb $90 in lieu of taxes for land it owns in Edgecomb. The Selectmen have given
this money to the Schmid Preserve Committee.
- Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
- Draft Project Agreement: The Schmid Committee’s comments on the agreement were sent to Maurine Hoffman of
SVCA. Both the committee’s draft and SVCA’s draft will be sent to the Department of Conservation and Inland Fish
and Wildlife. No funds will be released until the agreement is approved.
- Proposed Adjacent Development Status: Jim Beam reported that the Church property which on the southern edge of
the preserve and runs to McKay Road, is approximately 65 to 70 acres. He talked with Glenis Church and her sister
to see if they would agree to have their land appraised. No commitment was made but he told them an offer may be
made in the future or there may be some arrangement whereby they could sell the land and be able to live there for
the rest of their lives. They were open to the suggestion of having the land appraised. The land would be appraised
two ways -- the whole property and then just the house and building lot.
Bob Leone reported he had spoken to the Undas who are purchasing land west of the preserve and will contact them
again in the future.
- Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
- Mowing status: Bob Leone reported that $112.50 had been received from Mary Thompson, Department of Agriculture,
covering one-third of the total amount to be given for mowing. It was decided to pay Barry Hathorne $187.50 in
addition to the $112.50 for a total of $300 for the mowing that has been done to date. The balance will be paid after
this year’s mowing is completed ($225 from the Dept. of Agriculture and $75 from the Preserve).
- Trapping Update: A note had been received from Mike Brown, who had trapped in the preserve last year, thanking the
committee and reporting that he had trapped three coyotes, one red fox and three raccoons.
- Kiosk Construction: Deb Sondergaard reported that she had left a message for Chuck Richardson, the Boy Scout
troop leader, to see if the scouts would be interested in building a kiosk but had not heard from him. Bob Leone will
see if he can get some lumber donated for the kiosk..
- New Signs: Bob Leone is working on a sign listing the management guidelines which should be posted on the kiosk
by the next meeting. The Middle Road sign is cut and painted and waiting for lettering. A smaller sign will be placed
in the parking lot near the kiosk.
- Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
- Monday Night Work trips: Work trips were scheduled for the next few Mondays at 5:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at
the Old County Road entrance.
- Meadow Brook Bridge: Andy Abello will pick up the lumber for the bridge at Jim Beam’s.
- Other Business
Deb Sondergaard reported that a gentleman from York County who leads a group of at- risk children from Lincoln and
Sagadahoc Counties had asked if they could help. Deb will contact him to arrange dates which would be mutually
convenient.
A National Trails Day walk will be scheduled for the first week of June.
