TOWN OF EDGECOMB SCHMID ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

November 19, 2003, Town Hall

  1. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bob Leone. Committee members present were Andy Abello, Jim Beam, Jo Cameron, Bob Leone, Dick Oulton, and David Tonry. Also present were Betty Twarog, Faith Coakley and Janet Blevins. There was no public input at this time.
  2. Chairman’s Report - Bob Leone
    1. Review of Meeting Minutes: The Selectman’s Report was amended to add "through distribution of meeting minutes.” Under Paragraph 4, “survey markers” was changed to “boundary signs.”
    2. Next meeting: December 17, 2003
    3. RiverLink, LFMF: Bob Leone reported that he will obtain from Mark DesMeules a copy of the Phase II material sent to LFMF, the appraisal of the Haselton property has been submitted to LFMF, and landowners will be kept informed on progress.
  3. Selectman’s Report - Jo Cameron

Jo Cameron had advised the chairman of property for sale on River Road. The chairman said the committee should at some future date investigate the possibility of making Briar Brook the eastern boundary of the preserve in the event funds for a purchase become available.

  4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads - David Tonry
    1. New brochure: David had prepared new maps and had added the Link Trail to the map.
  5. Public Relations and Stewardship - Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard
    1. Mowing Status: Bob Leone reported that he had seen Barry Hathorne mowing the Haggett field, but his equipment had broken down before completing the mowing. Bob will contact Barry for an update.
    2. Apple tree restoration/pruning workshop: Betty Twarog reported that the workshop was fascinating and everyone was extremely enthusiastic. Approximately 12 to 15 people from Wiscasset, Waldoboro, Boothbay and Edgecomb attended and were instructed on clearing the area around the trees and shown which branches should be pruned. Bob Leone said he had received a letter from Mary Thompson with advice on selecting various kinds of trees for the preserve. He also said he had spoken to a woman from Whitefield who home-schooled her children and could organize a group of home-schooled children for a workshop.
    3. Hunting season report: Committee members reported hearing some shots, but there were mixed opinions about whether there were fewer or more hunters this year.
    4. Sign sample review: Bob Leone distributed samples of various sizes and types of signs for the committee’s input. The consensus was that the sign should be approximately 32’ x 18’ and hung from a cross piece or arm mounted on a post. The background would be green with white lettering. The wording would be (first line) Charles and Constance, (second line) SCHMID LAND PRESERVE, (third line) Town of Edgecomb and (fourth line) Bob Brown Parking Lot (upper and lower case as typed here). Bob will bring samples or the sign itself to the next meeting.
  6. Trails - Jim Beam and Dick Oulton
    1. Link Trail: Bob Leone reported that Jim Beam had done some cutting on the trail which will probably be used mostly by cross-country skiers and snow shoers. He said there were a couple more trees that could come out.
    2. Bridge update: Bob Leone said that no work would be done on the bridge this year, but the permit is good until September 2004. Deb Sondergaard will try to get a group of people out to the site to do preliminary planning and mark two trees for stringers.
  7. Other Business

There was discussion regarding changing the meeting day to accommodate Andy’s schedule, but the decision was made to keep the meetings on the third Wednesday of the month to avoid conflicts with other schedules.

Review of the Management Plan will be on the next agenda.

  8. Public Input and Comment

Betty Twarog asked that the agenda be posted, as it had not been in the post office the last two months.

Adjourn - 8:05 p.m
