Town of Edgecomb Minutes for Schmid Advisory Committee Meeting
October 16, 2002, 7:00 p.m., Town Hall

1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Bob Leone, Chairman at 7:05 p.m. Board members present were Andy Abello, Jim Beam, Bob Leone, Deb Sondergaard, and David Tonry. There was no public input.

2. Chairman’s Report – Bob Leone

A. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as presented.

B. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 20th.

3. Selectmen’s Report

Although Bob Zak was not present, he had recommended that he and Bob Leone begin attending meetings with the Damariscotta River Association and the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association in order to become more informed on the Land for Maine’s Future grant. The next meeting is November 7th.

4. Land Acquisition, Boundaries and Roads

A. Hunting Season: The main gate to the preserve on Old County Road is now open for hunting season, the north gate is presumed to be closed. Bob Leone will put up a sign near the north gate indicating that it is locked and that Old County Road is the only access.

B. Rip-rap for parking area culvert: Bob Leone reported that he had put rip-rap on one side of the culvert and will do the other side soon. The final paperwork for the parking lot had been received and the total bill for $4,824.86 had been sent to the DOT.

Bob Leone said he would paint a sign board approximately 68” x 36” for the kiosk where bulletins and maps can be posted.

5. Public Relations and Stewardship – Andy Abello and Deb Sondergaard

A. Eagle Scout Project - Bob Leone said he had asked Scout Leader Steve Dowdy if he and the scouts could come up with steel grating to cover the wells. Mr. Dowdy will check into it.

6. Trails – Heidi Gagnon and Jim Beam

A. Bridge Construction – Bob Leone said he would prefer to spend his time doing trail layout and asked for a volunteer to work with Matt Jones to build the bridge. The width of the bridge was discussed and it was the consensus that the bridge be 36 inches wide with four-inch toe rails on either side, leaving a travel width of 28 inches. This width would allow hikers and skiers to use the bridge but would keep out snowmobiles and ATVs. Andy Abello will work on it.

B. Trail Layout – Bob Leone said that he had scouted out trails on November 14th and pointed out on the map two connecting loops he would like to see laid out. He asked for volunteers to accompany him on Sunday, October 20th from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. to locate old trails and roads which could be tied together for the trail system. Volunteers will meet at Middle Road. David Tonry will figure out the best way to use GPS for mapping the trails.

Barry Hathorne said that the pond which is shown on the survey of his property is also shown on the survey of the preserve. In Barry’s opinion the ownership of the land where the pond is located cannot be determined until another survey is done. Barry asked that the board write him a letter requesting permission to use that section of land to the pond if the preserve trails are to go through it. Bob Leone will refer the matter to the Selectmen.

7. Other Business

The gate which Bob Brown is storing will be installed in December, maybe 100 yards from the parking lot, if the trail work is done and weather permits. Jim Beam offered to store it until then if it needs to be moved from Bob Brown’s.

8. Public Input and Comment - None
