of Edgecomb Minutes for Schmid Advisory Committee Meeting Notes on Informal Discussion of the Schmid Advisory Committee August 21, 2002, 7:00 p.m., Town Hall
Bob Leone, Bob Zak, Deborah Sondergaard and David Tonry were present at 7:00 p.m.; however, as a quorum was not present, an official meeting was not held.
Barry Hathorne referred to previous discussions by the committee regarding the width of the planned bridge and asked whether anything had been decided. He said he had had problems with ATVs and suggested that since motorized vehicles are not allowed in the preserve, the bridge be built narrow enough so that they cant use it. Bob Leone said that the bridge would not have to be used by fire vehicles as they could get to that area on either side of the water. He added that this would be discussed when the full committee was present.
The chairman said the notes of the last meeting accurately reflected what had been discussed. The next meeting will be September 18.
Bob Zak reported that the Schmid Committee minutes are now on the Towns website. The final deed for the Haselton property has been filed. The Carfizzi court case has been delayed a third time.
Progress has been made on the parking area, the area has been cleared and rough gravel put down. Permission from the DOT for the parking lot was received on August 9th. Signage will be needed.
Bob Zak reported that he had spoken to Amanda Russell regarding the status of several grant applications. Although there had been a meeting regarding the Land for Maines Future grant, the results of that meeting were not available. Andy Abello had obtained a copy of the opinion of value to give to the Damariscotta River Association for the Land for Maines Future grant. Bob Leone briefly summarized the efforts of the DRA and SVCA to put together a grant to acquire land around Sherman Lake, possibly touching on the Schmid Preserve.
Regarding acquisition priorities, Bob Leone said that after the Haselton property, the Carfizzi land or the Connecticut Smith property would be the committees first priority if either of those became available, although at present neither of those owners appeared willing to sell.
Commenting on the newsletter, David Tonry reminded the committee to use Charles G. and Constance M. Schmid Preserve where possible instead of just Schmid Preserve.
Bob Leone will work on flagging trails before the next meeting. SVCA will provide a master map and David Tonry offered to help put the trails on the map.
The Boothbay 7th and 8th graders are still interested in visiting the preserve and Bob Leone will contact them before the next meeting to determine what they might be interested in doing on the preserve. The Eagle Scout is working on his project locating wells. He has found three which are 7 to 10 feet deep.
Bob Leone said he had received an inquiry about holding a Boy Scout Camporee with 200-300 campers in the preserve. Overnight camping is allowed in the preserve with permission from the committee. This will be discussed at a later date.
Deborah Sondergaard recommended that at the next meeting the committee talk about getting a work party together to finish up loose ends.
David Tonry asked whether assimilating the Haselton property into the preserve could limit uses of the preserve. Bob Leone said that there was more danger if it was not tied in. He added that the grants to purchase the Haselton property assumed that it would be managed the same as the preserve. A warrant article to include the Haselton property into the preserve will be prepared for the next Town Meeting.
The meeting ended at 7:45 p.m. |
