Minutes for November 16, 2006

Present: Sue Carlson, Jo Cameron, Ruth Bryant, Zibette Dean, guests Tom Blackford, Headmaster, and Nick Slovak, student, The Deck House School.

The minutes of October 26 were approved as read, adding the time of adjournment. The Treasurer reported dues of $40, two donations and one map sale, with an expenditure of $31.20 in postage, to a current balance of $3,101.52. This report was approved.

Jo Cameron reported a gift from Debby Hammond, daughter of Peggy Hammond Doggett and Maro Hammond, a typed transcription Peggy had made of a portion of diary of a Capt. John Clew, describing a truly horrendous sea voyage.

Nick Slovak presented his research to date on American Revolution and War of 1812 veterans buried in the so-called "Baptist Cemetery," which has become a focus of community work for the Deck House School. He is tracing the history of Isaac Pool(e), born 1766, died 1840, with a photographic portrait and a genealogy. In 1821, at age 24, Mr. Poole had a harrowing adventure escaping from pirates in the Caribbean. His descendants owned Poole's Landing in East Edgecomb. He also reported on Moses Huff who served on the ship Hancock under a Captain Hanley. Another Deck House student is researching the cemetery's Civil War veterans, in particular a Benjamin Whitney who was at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Wilderness Campaign.

Sue dubbed Jo "Program Chair" and Jo obligingly dug into a small old suitcase, expecting to find Christmas ornaments, but no! What emerged was a trove of elaborate Halloween masks, noisemakers and decorations going back to her mother's childhood, the 19-teens and ‘20s

Sue Carlson told us about her family's Swedish-American celebrations, when her mother became a non-stop cook, cranking out delicious breads and cookies, and smørgasbord preparations, from gravlax to gløgg!

On that mouth-watering note, we adjourned the Fall Session of the Edgecomb Historical Society at 3:30 p.m., to reconvene in March 2007.

Respectfully submitted,

Joanna M. Cameron
