Minutes for May 24, 2007

Attending: Ruth Bryant, Roslyn Strong, Suzanne Carlson, Joanna Cameron, David Cole.

The minutes of the meeting and lecture of April 26 , 2007 were approved as read.

Treasurer Ruth Bryant reported $5.00 dues and $15.00 donation from Rebecca Graham, with expenditures of $28.00 for the Post Office box and $10.00 for April 26 refreshments. The new total is $3,138.22. It was voted unanimously to accept the Treasurer's report

President Sue Carlson said that Rose-Marie Ballard will be moving to Newcastle soon, that she will turn over a copy with photographs to the Town Officers and a copy without them to the EHS, but she is correcting last minute errors. The Comprehensive Plan Task Force is eager to have it, as Rose-Marie and Zibette Dean have been inventorying the Town's historic assets. Ros recommended storing the report in an acid free book, and arrange to copy the photographs from the Town's edition.

Sue also said she carried all the EHS/FOFE posters and maps to the Town Meeting, but found there was no room to display them or set up a table. We must think of a good venue for selling the maps.

Jo reported that Bob Norton, the Harbor Master, has advised against the Small Ship Event for the Fort Edgecomb Bicentennial, because of strong currents at that portion of the river.

The Society agreed to make Industrial Archaeology our target topic for the coming Fall session: Edgecomb has many mill sites, ice ponds, brickyards, and saltpans. Mica/feldspar mines and granite quarries can be explored. Again, the Rosicrucian Springs, as spa and bottled water industry. Sue cited the Colby Atlas for Lincoln County and the Society for Industrial Archaeology as sources of information. There was much speculation on 19th century revival of prehistoric copper and tin mines in the area. The pilings along the Folly Bar part of the Eddy Road stem from a one-time boatyard, and several members mentioned ferry landings and landings for goods boats along the Sheepscot and Damariscotta rivers.

It was voted unanimously to adjourn at 2:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Joanna M. Cameron
