Minutes for Apr. 27, 2006
In the absence of President Sue Carlson, who was ill, Vice President Ros Strong opened the meeting at 2:05 p.m.. The minutes of March 23, 2006 were accepted. The Treasurer reported income of $5.00 from Su Ripley, and the expenditures of $20.00, contribution to Maine History Day, and $28.00 to renew the Post Office box, for a total of $2,715.83.
Web Communications: Jo reported a message from Stuart Dodge of Tacoma, Washington, inquiring about his 4th great grandfather John Dodge, born in Edgecomb around 1783 and buried in the North Edgecomb Cemetery. He asked also about the "Dodge House," one of the Ivan Flye pictures on the website, which I have told him is believed to have been the home of Lincoln Dodge. He attached a jpeg of page 600, The History of St. Croix Valley by W.I. Pierce, which says that the John Dodge in question helped to build the "Old Block House." Here is the link: www.rootsweb.com/~wipierce/600.htm, for thems as wants to follow up.
Accessions: Jo also said she has started to use the two books of transcribed Town records recently donated to the Town of Edgecomb by putting the several cemetery lists into spreadsheet format. She is starting with the Baptist Cemetery, aka "Old Cemetery."
The needs of the Task Force to revise Edgecomb's Comprehensive Plan were discussed, in respect to a plan for archaeologically sensitive areas in the town. There is a prehistoric site on the eastern edge of Davis Island, in back of the Mostly Maine store property, but an archaeologist has stated that he has noted nothing of interest there.
Jo asked about Goose Rock in the Sheepscot River, which might become involved in the building of the Wiscasset Bypass if route option N8c is adopted. Apparently the MDOT consultants have designated it as archaeologically sensitive. More information is needed.
In discussing the Bypass, it was mentioned that there is a stone mound next to the railroad tracks near the organic farm at 76 Trails End, off Cochran Road. Unfortunately, the railroad bridge is posted "No Trespassing."
New Business: Plans were laid for having an EHS table at the Town Meeting on May 20, for memberships and sales of our copies of the 1857 Edgecomb map. Those interested in manning this table should be at the School by 9:00 or 9:30 a.m.
It was suggested that EHS approach Bob Brown for a possible lobster boat tour of the town.
The next meeting will be May 25, 2006. This will be the last meeting before the Summer Break. We adjourned at 3:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Joanna M. Cameron
