Let us salute the passing of Alice Boardway, beloved by all for her own great love of our town and the people in it. Her cheerfulness, good sense, and readiness to assist in all our endeavors will be greatly missed. On a personal note, the Boardway family were such good friends of my family! I can see Alice now, fishing out steaming lobsters at Fort Edgecomb. Our deepest condolences to all her family, particularly Ann and Joan and great-grandchildren who live in our town. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at the Edgecomb Congregational Church in Edgecomb, with Reverend Tom Clough officiating. Should friends desire, donations may be made to the Edgecomb Congregational Church, P.O. Box 113, Edgecomb ME 04556 in Alice's memory.
Speaking of Fort Edgecomb, put down this newspaper and phone Bintliff's Ocean Grille for a dinner reservation tonight! Bintliff's "Just Desserts" are being meted out to the Fort Edgecomb Bicentennial Committee this evening, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a splendid Wine and Cheese Tasting and fabulous Silent Auction in the Ocean Grille's upper rooms. Ten percent of the evening meal's profits will be donated to the FEBC, which will go far to help us prepare a truly festive celebration of the Fort's 200th Year in June, 2009. Thanks, Roger!
The North Edgecomb Cemetery Association will hold its Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. at the Edgecomb Town Hall. Among the items on the agenda will be the increased mowing budget, and what measures should be taken for the repair of broken gravestones. The Association is alarmed that so few residents seem interested in joining this organization which exercises such an important responsibility towards so many of our forebears and more recently lost loved ones! Please attend this meeting, to ensure the serene and orderly continuation of such a venerable piece of sacred ground. Call Ruth Bryant, 882-5510 for details.
In celebration of Earth Day, come to the Second Sustainable Energy Expo at the Damariscotta YMCA this weekend, April 18 and 19! Sponsored by the Midcoast Green Coalition, the Expo will provide a panorama of new, green technology, for home improvements, business opportunities, employment training and opportunities!
While I was doing some shopping at the River End Farm, I saw a poster for their first children's cooking class, in the Farm's on-premise kitchen. The instructors will be Chef Jim Dorian and his 14-year-old daughter Libby, and this first class will focus on breakfast. The important food groups will be stressed. The class will start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 and run through 11:00 a.m. The cost is $10. Space is limited to 10 children, from 6 to 10 years of age, so call 633.4044 right now! River End Farm owner Mary Beth DuBois says that if the response is enthusiastic, she hopes to present a full series of cooking classes for children.
