Rabid fox in Edgecomb! Tuesday, May 30, Dave Clifford on the River Road called to tell me he had recently shot a fox and on a hunch, took it to Augusta. Lab results were positive for rabies. His dog is currently quarantined and the cats are under house arrest. All pet owners, keep alert!
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, a group of students from the Deck House School and a number of residents gathered at the Old "Baptist" Cemetery on Old County Road for a memorial service for veterans buried in the small graveyard. Student Nick Slovak presented his research about the military men, and honor salutes were fired for each one by two students with muzzleloader shotguns. It was a fine event!
Joan Taylor on the Mill Road is holding Hatha Yoga classes three evenings a week, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. She is offering another class on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., and a Thursday morning class, 9:00-10:30 a.m. All ages, all abilities welcome! Hatha Yoga involves holding positions that stretch your muscles, increase your flexibility and improve your balance, as well as enhance your ability to breathe, reduce your heart rate and blood pressure and generally relieve stress. Call her at 882-6637 to find out more.
Louise Hardina is really crowing with delight these days! "Jo," she tells me, "you wouldn't believe the space we (the Edgecomb Congo Thrift Shop) are taking up now. Our hours for the summer: In addition to Monday afternoons, we are now open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays we serve lunch, soup and/or sandwich, simple eats. Whoever is shopping at the moment is invited to join us." Requested lunch donation, $2.00. Coffee and tea will also be provided.
The Thrift Shop also has a nice selection of books, and offers an exchange: for each donated book, you can buy one at half price, which for hard covers is 50 cents. Also free magazines, and they'd welcome more. A new rack of plus size clothes (XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL). And ask Louise about her German bearded iris at $3.00 a pop! Such a boggin!
When Bruce went down to the BRRDD on Monday, he found a major change! All recyclable glass is now in one bin. This means you don't have to sort colored from clear glass any more. Just bring them in! Rinsed out, please.
Edgecomb graduating students among their respective high schools' Top Ten: At Wiscasset High School, Hollyann Jost, daughter of Eric and Dorothy Jost; Leah Lemont, daughter of David and Gwen Lemont and Kate Riser (who is also the President of the WHS Chapter of the National Honor Society), daughter of Chris Riser and Julianne Sexton. At Boothbay Region High School, Evelyn Smith, daughter of Frances Pierce and Ted Smith. Well done, all!
Another Ooops called to my attention: Last week I was guiding you all to the Friday Farmers' Market which has relocated over to the Damariscotta River Association's grounds, but some mysterious force made me say "Monday." Beware of mysterious forces which interfere with efficient and accurate brain action. They are a menace! I should also have pointed out the Farmers' Market on Thursdays in Boothbay Harbor, the parking lot of the High School. No excuse to run out of fresh veggies!
Don't forget, one of the Nine Hidden Gardens on the Garden Club of Wiscasset's tour June 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is in Edgecomb! To order tickets and a box lunch, call Kay Lieser at 882-9135 or Sally Howe, 882-6606, or email GardenClubOfWiscasset@hotmail.com
Across the Sheepscot, I'm delighted to learn that Emily LeVan, two-time top American woman to finish the Boston Marathon, will be trying out for the 2008 U.S. Olympic marathon team! Well done, Emily! Let's all cheer her on!
