Last call for the Town of Edgecomb's Election of Officers, Friday, May19, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Town Hall.

X Marks the Spot! Note this: Lisa McSwain is running as a write-in candidate for Planning Board. If you write in her name, or any other name for the position, please remember to mark the box beside the write-in line with an X! Or else your vote will not be counted!

And then, of course, Saturday, May 20, starting at 10:00 a.m., come to the Edgecomb Town Meeting! Let your voice be heard! Be sure to stop by the Edgecomb Historical Society's table outside the auditorium door to buy one of their new blown-up copies of the 1857 Edgecomb Map! Only $15.00!

Then, Tuesday, May 25, we'll hope to see you all at the Edgecomb Historical Society meeting when we will have as guest Mary Ellen Barnes, who has been spearheading her own town's interest in its history, from Jeremysquam to Westport Island! We meet in the Edgecomb Eddy School's conference room at 2:00 p.m.

As I recall, the weathered poster on the side of the Haggett barn, long since collapsed, read: "Something doing all the time! The band plays every night!"

Congratulations, Andi Burt! For her work as the Maine Council of Churches' environmental justice director, she has recently received the EPA's 2006 Environmental Merit Award for her outstanding contributions and leadership for preserving our region's natural balances and beauties.

A stern reminder to any property owners who still have a balance due on 2005/2006 real estate taxes: To avoid extra charges and the probability of a tax lien, payment needs to be made this week, no later than 5:00 p.m. today, Thursday, May 18. Payments can be made in person during office hours (Mondays, 8:00-9:00 p.m.; Tuesdays/Thursdays, 1:00-5:00 p.m.). Since by now there is interest due on all balances, please check with Tax Collector Lee Smith, 882.7018, on the correct amount before making payment. Since Friday the 19th is Town Election Day, Lee will be at the Town Hall that afternoon and will accept payments then as well. That will be the last day, however, before the lien notices go out.

Joan Spurgat has just retired from 16 years as the Children's Librarian at the Wiscasset Public Library. But will she repose in a hammock, sipping lemonade? Ha! She and husband Gary operate the Woodsong Bed and Breakfast on the Cross Point Road. Hammocks and rocking chairs are still far in their future!

For the summer, starting Thursday, May 18, the Edgecomb Congo Thrift Shop will have added hours: Besides Mondays 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., it will be open Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The profits are donated to various local worthy causes. For May, Healthy Kids will be the recipient. Call Louise Hardina, 563-5236, for information.

Welcome, Ms. Yunxie Zhao, from Ningguo Anhui, China, a foreign exchange teacher at the Edgecomb Eddy School through June! She is staying with Larry and Susan Burkett on Quarry Point Road.

If you are responsible for a private road or are a developer or builder or owner building his own road, come to the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District's half-day workshop at the Boothbay Fire Department on Tuesday, May 30! You will learn how to identify erosion and sediment control problems on a local unpaved road, and how to solve them, with a special feature on equipment for grading your road. To register, for $10, and get more details, reach Michael Thibault, Outreach Education with K-L S&W, michael.thibault@me.nacdnet.net or call him at 273-2005, ext. 106.

A pair of purple finches have come to our birdfeeder! The goldfinches are increasingly golden. The hairy woodpecker couple are making out in and out of the lilac bush. Welcome, sweet Springtime, we greet thee with song at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
