Congratulations to everyone who has taken courses from Central Maine Community College offered on the Boothbay/Boothbay Harbor peninsula during this last semester. You and your parents need to understand these are college credit courses, transferable to any 4-year college you want to attend, achieved at a far lower cost than you would pay at that college!
In particular, if you are in your last year of high school, and undecided whether college or work, check out the Wooden Boat Building courses 101 and 102 offered through CMCC at Boothbay Boat Builders.
And a rousing huzzah for Edgecomb Deans' Listers Ed Speed at Southern Maine Community College, Nicole Brooks and David Nickerson, both at U.M Orono!
We are saddened to learn of Vito Stanley's passing. His first wife, Barbara Reed Stanley, was a good friend during my childhood. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 385 River Road on Saturday, April 29 from noon to 3:00 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, POB 7, in Edgecomb.
Lot Owners at the North Edgecomb Cemetery! Your presence is urged at the Cemetery Association Annual Meeting which will be Saturday, April 22, at 10:00 a.m. at the Town Hall. "We need to discuss certain gravestones that need repair," says Ruth Bryant, "and also to approve this year's mowing contract with Allen Hersom." Come on over! The coffee's hot, whether you own a lot or not!
Bruce and I encountered many Edgecombites at the Seeds of Peace dinner last Friday! Andi Burt co-ordinated and presented a superb Middle Eastern spread, and this red-meat eater didn't even mind that it was entirely vegetarian! The children from the Edgecomb Congregational Church did us all proud with their excellent waiting on table. They even knew the names of the dishes, no mean feat when you are juggling hummus b'tahini, baklava and baba ghanouj on trays!
Early Alert:: The Edgecomb Eddy PTC are holding their Yard Sale May 13th , from 8:00 in the morning to noon. Act now to rent a table for $20.00. Call the School, 882-5515, for contact people and details.
And a reminder: You may find an Easter bonnet at the Edgecomb Congo. Thrift Shop, open Mondays 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesdays 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Call Louise Hardina, 563-5236, for information.
Another reminder: Donate your deposit bottles and cans to the Edgecomb Fire Department, who have a wire basket on the Station's grounds to receive them!
I recently took the Boothbay Region Adult Education course on Pysanki, the wonderfully intricate Ukrainian technique for decorating Easter eggs. Instructor Barbara Lally showed us how to apply the mitska, a tiny brass funnel bound by copper wire to a wooden handle, the "pen" for drawing the delicate lines and figures in hot beeswax on the egg's surface. The wire conducts the heat from a candle flame to melt the small lump of wax in the top of the funnel. Not easy, and forget about straight lines! It was amazing, though, how we got more confident during the class. But nowhere near so masterful as Barbara, who explained she's been doing it for 40 years!
For Easter I have sent each of my daughters one of Gary Balducci's emu eggs. They are gorgeous, a deep Prussian blue, the size and appearance of a large avocado! They need no decoration. However, Barbara Lally, who showed us an ostrich egg a la pysanki, says the blue is superficial, and can be scratched off, if one wants a white on dark background design.
I still want a full egg, Gary, for the Mother-of-All-Omelets! Egg-rolling at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
