Welcome home, Bill Speed! A Senior at Wiscasset High School, he returned home from 6 months in the town of Toyohashi, near Nagoya, Japan, as an American Field Service exchange student. According to his mother, Martha Speed, the first thing he asked for, off the plane at midnight last Saturday, was pizza and some chocolate milk!
Area Democrats are invited to meet with Representative Tom Allen at the Boothbay American Legion Hall on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 4:00 p.m. Bring your questions and concerns! Don't forget the Lincoln County Democratic Caucus on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Great Salt Bay School in Newcastle. For more information on both these events, call Zibette Dean, 633-0734.
Important appeals from your friendly Selectmen and Fire Department: Chief Johnston is compiling a list of residents who may need help with transportation in case of emergency evacuations. If you anticipate such a problem, or know someone who might be stranded on a back road with no vehicle, please let us know. Call the Town Hall, 882-7018, during business hours (Mondays, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.) or get in touch with Johnston, Hopper, Perkins or Cameron. Everyone should know that the Edgecomb Eddy School has been designated the Town's emergency shelter and in times of need will receive cots and food supplies from the American Red Cross chapter in Brunswick.
There is a further need: Readiness of an emergency shelter will require a Shelter Manager. We need to find someone with medical or nursing credentials who would be willing to serve in this capacity. For information on the requirements and likely tasks, please get in touch with Chief Johnston at 882-7443 or at edgefire@midcoast.com.
Also, the Edgecomb Planning Board has been looking at the land use ordinances with respect to the most recent changes in Maine laws. Keep your ear out for a sequence of public informational meetings and a public hearing to come during the month of March. To get acquainted with the particular issues, go to the Edgecomb web site, www.Edgecomb.org, and click on Planning Board Minutes for the months of January 2006 and December 2005.
Hooboy, Edgecomb actors! The Boothbay Playhouse is reviving, and they plan a production of "Annie, Get Your Gun!" for this coming July. I learned of the organizational meeting too late for this column, but if interested in auditioning, or working with stage management, call director Ginny Bishop at 633-2855 with any questions. It will be good to see those particular boards trod again!
Neighbors and friends who remember performances at the Boothbay Playhouse, please send me your memories and after-the-years criticism! I have fond memories of "Anything Goes!" Sang what I could of the repertory ad nauseam, the family had to sit on me at times! I suppose "I get no kick from cocaine" is politically incorrect, but hey! "You're the Tops" with me at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
