I am sure you have read in last week's obituaries that Dot Hathorne died Saturday, July 2 after a long illness. Her funeral was Wednesday, July 6, at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. Our deepest condolences to her husband Sammy and her son Barry. She truly lived in a house at the side of Edgecomb's River Road, and was a friend to all.
Nauticals, fabric works by Gayle Fraas and Duncan Slade on the River Road are featured at the Gleason Fine Art gallery in Boothbay Harbor this month. Signal flags of all sorts surround tranquil scenes of the Maine coast.
The Edgecomb Fire Department got lucky with a break in the weather for their food drive out on Route 1 on Davis Island last Sunday! Chief Barry Johnston thanks the members of the EFD and all contributors to the drive for its great success.
To celebrate the work of the Eldercare Network of Lincoln County, come to the second Edgecomb Congregational Church Summer Supper, Saturday, July 16, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. This time we'll feast on baked ham, macaroni & cheese, salad, baked beans, beverages, sherbet and cookies! (Dietetic alternative available.) Adults $6.00, children under 12, $3.00. For anyone who wishes to help out with preparation or clean-up, call Gail Boudin, 882-7972, or the Church office, 882-4060. Remember, the Eldercare Network operates the Eddy School Apartments!
Congratulations, School Superintendent Eileen King! She has received one of the five Outstanding Leadership Awards made by the Maine Superintendents' 2005 conference. Among her responsibilities as head of School Union #49 is, of course, our Edgecomb Eddy School.
Joe Hoyt, son of Susie Stephenson on the River Road, will be embarking for points European on his People to People Student Ambassadors tour Sunday, July 17. Have a Grand Tour, Joe!
Ramone Hanley-Warren tells me that her son Gabe Warren, playing soccer for the Coastal Thunder Boys Team (U-13) in Brunswick, and Sara Leone, daughter of Bob and Carol, with the Odyssey Sport Girls Team (U-15) in Portland, have returned from competition in the Region 1 Championship Games in Virginia Beach over the 4th of July weekend. Gabe's team was able to participate by having won the U-13 Maine State Championship Title. They competed against several other eastern seaboard teams, including Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Virginia. Congratulations, both!
I have just enjoyed a visit from a distant cousin, Pat Watts, and her mother, over from New York State for a brief holiday in Boothbay Harbor. We've been corresponding by e-mail for several years; this was our first meeting. Fun! Looked at my ancestral photo albums, comparing notes on the various relatives. Pat is creating a McDonald/MacDonald website and wants to collect as much data as well as pictures as she can. I am glad their last day, at any rate, was sunny enough for a hike or a boat trip!
Best wishes to Jeffrey and Samantha Hill, who were married in April in Jamaica. Samantha is the daughter of Victoria and Sumner Bell on the Mill Road.
Booklovers, beware! Saturday, July 16, is the release date for the sixth volume of Harry Potter! I am amazed how well J.K. Rowling has kept up her fantasy. As I understand it, her aim is seven books, getting Harry out of Sixth Form and into adulthood. Want to join me to form the Edgecomb Quidditch Team? Practicing moves on my Millennium Kestrel broomstick at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
