Wiscasset Newspaper

Welcome, little Emily Rose Densmore, born April 1 to parents Toby and Stacy, brothers Aaron and Steven, all on the River Road.

Edgecomb's Wall Street: Congratulations, Rick Elder and Steve Ward, both Edgecomb residents and executives with the First National Bank of Damariscotta. Rick is now Senior Vice President, Retail Banking Services; Steve, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for not only The First, but for First National Lincoln Corporation.

Edgecomb in the Groves of Academe: On the Lincoln Academy Honor Roll we find Robert Langton, Freshman, high honors; Ruth Langton, Senior, high honors; Samantha Beam, Sophomore, honors!

Farther afield, Niall Janney, son of Esme McTigh, is doing well at Exeter, honors in his first term, high honors in his second as a Freshman. Niall has been doing a lot of swimming competition, of course: at the YMCA States competiton at UM-Orono March 6, swam for the Bath Y team with a first in the 200 individual medley; 1st place in 100 fly, a new state record! And first place in the 100 Backstroke; qualified for four events and two relays as a 14-year-old at Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale FL; qualified for US Swimming Zones Championship; qualified for US Sectionals Championship in 3 events, expecting to attend this summer or next year.

Kid sister Petra swam up in the 13-14 age group as an 11-year-old, to help Bath's team with points; US Champs at Bowdoin in March, placed 2nd overall in the 11-12 age group by 3 points; 1st place in 6 events, 2d place in 3 events; broke Bath Y age group records in 200 IM, 200 back and 200 fly; broke Y State record in 100 back; qualified for US Swimming Zones Championship, competing with 400-500 superb swimmers from Maine to Virginia.

For parents who are facing a summerful of kids! Check out the Woolwich Historical Society's history day camp for children aged 8 to 12. Scheduled from July 18 to 22, call Gina Hamilton at 443-4657 or ginalhamilton@aol.com for information and application forms.

Lee Smith is really pleased with her wonderful new Town Hall typewriter, a gift to her from Bill Collins on the Boothbay Road. Lest you wonder why she doesn't use a computer, it's for the forms! All kinds of multi-part pre-printed forms come from the State, which is not yet comfortable with computerized forms.

Don't miss Amanda Russell's interview with Veula Reed, appearing in the forthcoming Schmid Preserve newsletter! Thank you, Veula, for letting us use the picture of your grandmother standing by her Mount Hunger home.

And speaking of the Schmid Preserve, the Committee is planning a couple of work parties in May, scheduled for early evenings. If interested in helping to clear trails, call Deb Sondergaard, 882-6265.

The Edgecomb Historical Society's upcoming meeting will feature a selection of scanned copies of the Ivan Flye Photography Collection pertaining to Edgecomb. Come one, come all, Thursday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the conference room at the Edgecomb Eddy School, to admire and study these views from our past!

My big news story: Daughter Bisi and spouse Johnny Yee spent a few days with us this past week, plus stops with her sister Daphne and family in Connecticut coming and going. Despite the chill, we hiked as far as we could get from the Route 215 boardwalk to the west-side shell middens. Much easier on the Route 1 side, rambling downhill (and puffing uphill) to the Whaleback Midden. Good visit! Got some pictures hung. Admired a few turkeys, but the flock seems to be splitting up. Red-Breasted Woodpecker (or maybe Flickers?) and Carolina Wren put in appearances, but no Pileated.

Trying to get down to business at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
