Zibette Dean called to ask me to give her deepest thanks to the Edgecomb First Responders and the crew of the CLC Ambulance Service who rushed Nick to St. Andrews Sunday afternoon the 23rd. Nick died of lung cancer Friday, Jan. 28. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, February 19, at the Edgecomb Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maine Maritime Museum, 243 Washington Street, Bath ME 04530. Details to follow.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ross Merrow, up from Westborough, Mass., inquiring at the Town Hall for information on his Merrow/Merry ancestors, (the two versions are different spellings; the name Marrow is another variant). Mr. Merrow told me the following interesting tale: He was named Ross after Ross Field in Edgecomb, a site, according to tradition, if not fact, where several Merry children with their mother were killed by Indians, most probably in the 1740s, King George's War in the French and Indian War sequence. He asks, and so do I, does anyone know where this Ross Field is/was located? It should have a large boulder in it.

Ice Bowl Tournament: Sixteen brave disc hurlers (or since they were duct-taped together in pairs, was that eight?) went out Saturday, Jan. 22, to the Basket Case Links course on Route 27, despite the below zero weather! They raised over $300 and collected 569 pounds of food for Meals on Wheels! Good show!

Seniors and low to moderate income taxpayers, having trouble figuring out your tax forms? The IRS in cooperation with the AARP provides free tax information and assistance to individuals, especially those over 60. This service starts at the Boothbay Region YMCA on Monday, Feb. 7, from 9:00 a.m. to noon; on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Wiscasset Community Center. Call for appointments at 633-6748. Ask them what materials you must bring concerning your 2004 income and expenses.

Anyone know if the groundhogs in the Schmid Preserve have seen their shadows? Wistfully wondering at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
