I see that Angie Richards' new barn on the River Road is now closed off both ends. Last time I spoke with her, she was blocking in the horses' stalls.
The Friends of Fort Edgecomb are holding their Christmas party/meeting in the lobby of the Sheepscot River Inn on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7:00 p.m. Join them! Bring noshes! Remember, we all have a stake in the Fort! More about the Bicentennial come the New Year.
Mildred Ellinwood on the River Road recently fell from her cellar steps, breaking her hip and injuring her knee. Not wanting to spend time moaning in the cellar, she pulled herself up the 13 steps, some 25 feet, using her arms and elbows, then managed to knock the phone off its table to where she could reach it, and rang for help. She's home now, with her daughter Merry staying for the duration. We all hope the on-coming holiday season will see her on her feet again!
History notes: Sid Gammon on the Cross Point Road, who is Wiscasset's Harbormaster, has distributed various remains from the Hesper and the Luther Little. Some have gone to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath for restoration work; a medicine chest will go to Wiscasset Public Library, along with a bollard. Another bollard Sid would like to see displayed on the waterfront, while some of the metal parts might lend themselves to sculptures. One of the masts is salvageable; a carved bow rail is also under consideration for display, possibly in the Wiscasset municipal meeting room. Good work, Mr. Gammon! My mother was distraught at the seeming neglect and destruction of those two old ships.
Farther away, a banner of the 20th Maine Infantry is now on display at the Gettysburg National Military Park. This flag was a memorial made for a regimental reunion in 1889. If you plan a tour of Civil War battlegrounds, do stop and give the 20th a respectful nod!
Art note: Fraas/Slade on the River Road are exhibiting at the Firehouse Gallery's new "diminutive Masterworks" show, among 40 artists' very small works! Proceeds from this show will be donated to the Carpenters' Boat Shop in Pemaquid, an apprenticeship-school. This holiday exhibit opens Wednesday, Nov. 24 and runs through Friday, Dec. 31. Opening reception of Saturday, Nov. 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Come one, come all!
