Dome Demolition Day! Sheepscot-shore residents may be able to watch from afar the Maine Yankee containment dome implosion tomorrow morning. Warning: The general public will not be permitted on Bailey Point Peninsula. You will hear several air-horn warning signals, then the blast itself, and finally an all-clear signal. You may experience some vibration when the dome strikes the ground.
Baffled by Tax Reform? Confused by the Palesky Tax Cap Proposal? Bewildered about the fate of that Referendum we voted on in June? Come all ye, come all ye, on Sunday afternoon, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., to the Big Barn on Wind Ridge Farm on the Middle Road, home of Amanda Russell and Andy Abello! Hear Wes Bonney, chairman of the coalition, "Citizens United to Protect Our Public Safety, Schools and Communities," sort it all out. State Representative Bill Earle and State Senator Chris Hall will lead our discussion around this issue which affects us all profoundly. Edgecomb Selectmen and Edgecomb Eddy School teachers and administrators will be on hand, since the tax reform issue and the education funding issue are so tightly entwined, they might as well be one. Further lure: home-baked cookies and freshly brewed coffee. Directions? Turn onto Middle Road from Route 27 and follow the cars! The site will have signs.
Flowers of the Forest: Our hearts go out to Frank Richards and family for the loss of Kathy, who passed away September 2. All our deepest sympathies to the Bennett family for the passing of Sandra Bennett September 3. Our deepest sympathies also to the family of Thelma Lane, who passed away August 24. And to Robert Edwards for the loss of his mother Marjorie on Aug. 26. All will be sadly missed.
Saturday, Sept. 18, the Edgecomb Congregational Church's final supper of the summer will benefit our Edgecomb Fire Department's fire station expansion efforts! Baked beans and all the traditional fixings! 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., or until the food runs out! Adults $6.00, children under 12, $3.00. The Mission/Outreach Committee, which sponsors these suppers, invite all members of the community to help with donations of food and labor as a way to say "Thank You!" to our volunteer fire fighters for all their efforts on the Town's behalf. Call Gail Boudin at 882-7972 for details.
As to the progress of the Fire Station Extension, Chief Johnston reports that the floor is complete. A community barn-raising of the frame started Saturday and will be on-going, probably until the glorious big tanker truck rolls into the station drive. Once the exterior is shelled in, the roof will be shingled, and finally, the insulation and wiring. Now the Fire Department anxiously awaits the arrival of the vehicle.
The Edgecomb Historical Society is gearing up for its Fall meeting sequence: Our Annual Meeting will be Thursday, September 23, at 2:00 p.m., in the Library of the Edgecomb Eddy School. The topic will be The Truth About the Rosicrucian Spring! If time/weather and attendees' interest permit, we plan to hike to the generally agreed-upon site to view what is left of it. If not at this meeting, then on the weekend, the above conditions applying, of course.
Fluid Imaging Technologies on the Cross Point Road now has a U.S. sales distributor for its FlowCAM. Lone Star Instruments of Texas covers several southern states. To quote the press release, the FlowCAM, a continuous digital imaging particle analyzer, combines two basic research tasks - the imaging and the particle analysis – thus saving on costs in research, quality control and on-line manufacturing operations.
This may be old news, but discovered while learning about local anadromous fish: The record Atlantic Salmon fished out of the Sheepscot, a whopping 28 pounder, was caught by Cameron Clark who formerly lived on Goah Way Road. (For extra points, what's an anadromous fish?)
Three cheers for Basket Case Links Disc Golf Course owners Richard and Kathryn Gray and crew, who organized a recent tournament of this strange new sport to benefit our fighting men in Iraq. The course is accessible from Route 27, open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to dusk. Call 882-4277 or scan the website www.mainediscgolf.com for more information.
Edgecomb Eddy School fourth graders have out-performed the state average on three of the four subjects tested in the 2003-4 Maine Educational Assessment! Highest in math, science/technology and reading, with a respectable score in writing. Well done, crowd!
Which leads me to my annual School Season Wail: Parents of Remarkable Edgecomb Children! (All Edgecomb Children are Remarkable.) Now that school is underway, remember the old saying: "If you must hide your light under a bushel, be very sure to indicate under which bushel it is hidden!" I can't sing praises if I don't know who to sing praises about!
Hey, Remarkable Edgecomb Children, don't wait for the ol' folks! You can tell me about your achievements yourselves! Contact details always below.
My ear always to the ground at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
