Lament for a Heron: Recently, people traveling on Town Hall Road have been treated to the sight of a proud Great Grey Heron, stalking the tall grasses above the large gully. Monday afternoon, when I swirled into the Town Hall parking lot from Route 27, on the upper verge, I saw a clutter of grey, white, a bit of russet. I parked, and walked back out to look. It was all that was left of a great grey heron. Crumpled up in a U-bend of legs and beak, it looked so small, its once-piercing eyes blinded by death and carrion eaters. Not for the first time have I wished fervently that "lower" animals would evolve the smarts to avoid hard black stripes on the landscape. But then, there are so many hard black stripes, they'd wouldn't be able to follow their food supplies or get to their shelters.
