On Sunday there gathered on the lawn at Bob and Cindy Brown’s home on Route 27 as many of the past and present Officers of the Town of Edgecomb as could be mustered. Bruce and I were happy to join former and current Selectmen Phil Chaney (1967-9), Bob Brown (1975-81), Martha Speed (1986-98), Jed Colby (1987-93), Rodd Hopper (1975-83; 1996– ), Bob Zak (2001-4), myself (2002– ), Frank Perkins (2004– ), former Tax Collectors Rebecca Townsend (1983-5), Carol Colby (1972) and former Town Treasurer Dot Brown (1951-53), as well as Edith Chaney, hostess Cindy Brown, Ann Zak, Bruce Cameron, and Frank Perkins, Sr. Invited but could not attend were former Selectmen Arthur Garey (1983-9), Junellen Brault (1984-87), Fran Mague (1992-7), Peter Quinn (1996-9), William Smith (1998-2001), John Eaton (2000-2002), Robert Johnson (1993-6), current Town Treasurer Claudia Coffin and current Tax Collector Lee Smith. Thank you, Bob and Cindy, for a gorgeous spread of genuine Damariscotta River crab rolls, assorted salads and veggies with dips and mouth-watering cookies of every description.
Let me take this opportunity to assure that our hearts go out to the Perkins family, for their wife and mother, to Claudia Coffin, for her husband Stan and to the family of Frank Richards for their wife and mother Kathy, all of whom are seriously ill. Let us salute our neighbors’ gallantry and courage under these most difficult of life experiences.
When lightning struck Doug and Betty Kennedy’s Mill Road home July 9, the Edgecomb Fire Department was on the spot, with assistance from Wiscasset’s Fire Department. Damage was kept to a minimum, thanks to the two departments’ speed and professionalism. Thanks should go also to Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Day for traffic control during this crisis. Fortunately, the Kennedys have been able to remain in their house.
Congratulations, Sheepscot River Pottery, on 30 years of success! Their Edgecomb store on Davis Island recently celebrated with an Open House and demonstrations of their ceramic process.
Speaking of Open Houses, watch this space for news of the Eddy School Apartments’ grand opening later on this summer or early fall. The Eldercare Network is already taking applications for residency for able elderly in this new incarnation of our beloved old school. Those interested can write the Eddy School Apartments, P.O. Box 136, Edgecomb 04556, or call 882.9768 and ask for Sandy Guibord.
Edgecomb writers write again: Tomorrow (July 23) at the Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta, Van Reid will be signing copies of his just released 5th volume of Moosepath League adventures, “Fiddler’s Green, or a Wedding, a Ball, and the Singular Adventures of Sundry Moss.” If you’ve been following the series, you’ll know that Mr. Moss is the Passepartout, Sam Weller, Tonto to Tobias Walton, the genial head of the MPL.
High Honors from Lincoln Academy to Ruth Langton on the Cross Point Road! Well done, Ruth! Now entering her senior year, Ruth has been a consistent academic honoree. Also congratulations to Becky Beam on the McKay Road, who was one of her Class of ‘04's Marshals during the Wiscasset High School graduation ceremonies
Round-up on the River Road! Thank you to the nice lady who stopped by to tell us one of Alan Cooper’s new black heifers was out on the road. We all galloped uphill (Yeehaw! huff, puff) to find Alan had the situation under control. Prevailing theory: something tripped the electrical strand of his 3-wire fencing, possibly a raccoon.
