Saturday, June 19, 5:00-6:30 p.m., first Edgecomb Congregational Church supper of the season! This event will benefit Habitat for Humanity, a program committed to providing adequate, family owned housing. Adults, $6.00; children under 12, $3.00. The menu is traditional Maine church supper fare: baked beans, rolls, casseroles and pies. A dietetic dessert will be available. Good food, good fellowship, good cause!

Now that Fort Edgecomb has been lost and regained, Tom Blackford, my neighbor, and his merry crew of ten are off on another adventure. They will depart from the Maine Maritime Museum's pier in Bath on Friday, June 18, at 7:30 a.m. in the lapstrake cutter Increase, cunningly disguised as a longboat from the French ship Le Bizarre. This cheerful raiding party will arrive at Fort Western, Augusta, the afternoon of Sunday the 20th, to help the Fort celebrate its 250th Anniversary!

Oh, the wonders of Graduations and Commencements! Bruce and I went to the Lincoln Academy ceremony last Tuesday. Wonderful day, just the right kind of sun, cooled by breezes. The Class of 2004 were brisk, graceful, and some were awful hams as they accepted their diplomas and posed for the familial cameras. Various cheering sections resounded as each young person stepped across the green sward. I, for one, did not dwell on the future they may be entering into. I was content to carpe the diem.

David Nickerson, River Road, L.A. 2004 graduate, on a Senior Thank-You project at Camp Kieve; Sara Leone, Route 27, Wiscasset Middle School 8th grade honor roll, named a Middle Level Scholar Leader at a banquet in Augusta, end of May. In a WMS Prize Speaking, Sara orated "The Black Fly Festival," which I'm sorry I missed, as I am in the center of it, here in my garden. Ali Finnegan, Cross Point Road, recited "Stormy Night." She won an Honorable Mention.

Enough of Youth. Let us celebrate, um, maturity! Be sure to stop in at the Skidompha Library throughout this month to see an exhibit of paintings by people at The Lincoln Home and Hodgdon Green. Among them, Alice Boardway's paintings have been described as "fanciful, lighthearted and full of exploding color."

Last week's fun with the four quilters has led me to visit Edgecomb's On Board Fabrics, Route 27, to see the store's 20th Anniversary exhibit of quilts! The show, titled "Over the Counter, Out of the Box: Retail Fabrics Worked into Art," is in conjunction with the Maine Fiber Arts Festival, and features master quilters from all over the state. It will run through July 17. For more info, call 882-7536.

Bravo! Mid-Maine Restorations, Joe and Lisa McSwain at the Merry Barn, River Road! A fabulous job on the Lincoln County Courthouse cupola! Its many faceted all-new copper dome by Mark Murphy, also of Edgecomb. This was an exciting venture to follow.

Anyone of Scottish, or indeed, Gaelic in general, descent, you might want to organize a traditional ceilidh (kay-lee), or songfest for Edgecomb! Don and Dee Toll of Boothbay would like to help. Try them at 633-5996 or heegret@aol.com.

At last! My daughters Daphne Klemme and Bisi Yee are here for a week! Ben (6) and Katy (18 months) Klemme are busy finding all the pitfalls in a house geared to crotchety oldsters. We've been living in anticipation of this from the day we left Bloomington IN last summer! The hills are alive with the sounds of grandkids at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
