Ouch! Are we of the Edgecomb Historical Society embarrassed! We scheduled our April meeting during the school's spring vacation, so it didn't happen. Our apologies to anyone who rattled the gate in frustration last week. However, we are mustering again this afternoon, same time – 2:00 p.m., same place – Edgecomb Eddy School Library. Please forgive and join us!
I'm happy to report that the Friends of Fort Edgecomb have one safety boat lined up, (a Coast Guard requirement for public aquatic events!) but they would be happier with two or three! They will be meeting at the Sheepscot River Inn office on Wednesday, May 5, 7:00 p.m., to further cement plans for their 1812 Event, the Battle of Fort Edgecomb which will be the weekend of June 12-13. If any small boat owner/operator is interested, you can catch up with them there, or else call Matt and Laurel Dunn 377.5335, or e-mail to mldunn7@netzero.com.
I have partially answered my question of last week concerning an Edgecomb salt industry. According to the poster in the Boothbay Region Land Trust kiosk at the entrance to the Colby Nature Preserve, there were indeed salt evaporation pans in the southern end of Salt Marsh Cove, along with the mill, ice house, and other such staples of early local industry. But I ask again, were there other such sites? Has anyone tried their hand at sea salt evaporation lately?
Bothered by skunks under your porches or decks? Saturate the location by hose for a few days. Skunks don't like water beds. (This a recent Heloise Hint I thought might be of interest in these latitudes.)
Let's sing with zing of the Spring Fling which wings our way at the Edgecomb Eddy School, come May 8, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tables are still available for Yard Sale entrepreneurs. The table fee of $20 goes to the EEPTC for its various school enhancement projects. So think this way: A chance to get rid of that awkward lamp Aunt Tabitha gave you for your wedding; she's forgotten all about it. It'll look wonderful in neighbor Herman's den! How about all those hundreds of place mats people send as hostess gifts? Weed ‘em out and let us all have a chance at them! The outgrown baby car seat? The dressy slacks you no longer need because you're down from size 18 to size 12? The Christmas 1993 drill set you've never used? You'll make the fee back plus more besides! Call Judy Reid at the School, 882-5515, for details. Besides the Stupendous Yard Sale, fling yourselves through a grand barbecue, super games and activities for kids, and a special nursery-raised plant sale for Mother's Day (Hint, hint)!
