Edgecomb is going to open a gambling casino overlooking Cod Cove. We will also claim eminent domain halfway across the Davey Bridge and fill it with arts and crafts shops and small eateries.
Ha! Gotcha! April Fool!
I'm happy to report that the Special Town Meeting approved all warrant items concerning the new 2000-gallon pumper/tanker fire truck (sorry about that error last week!) and the addition to the present fire station to house it. After adjourning, some of us studied the Planning Board's new zoning map, and others reminisced about the Town Hall's balcony, once the site of Grange suppers, and what I remember, the Town Meeting bean suppers back when Town Meetings were all-day affairs and frequently ran late. I also remember that warrant items heard after the bean supper were at a disadvantage; people tended to leave after they'd eaten.
The last tenant of the balcony, the Edgecomb Historical Society, was sad to leave the old quarters, but we feel our new space in the Edgecomb Eddy School Library is more accessible. We spent a merry afternoon last week, oohing and ahing over our treasures, and are now planning how to properly archive our collections. Our next meeting will be April 22, at 2:00 p.m.
The Friends of Fort Edgecomb will be meeting next Wednesday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Sheepscot River Inn. Do any of you with boats want to play an important role in their 1812 Event, better known as The Battle of Fort Edgecomb? They need at least one safety boat to hover near the aquatic doings, in case anyone needs to be hauled out of the drink! Please call FOFE President Matt Dunn at 377.5335, or me, at the number below and I'll put him in touch with you.
Next Tuesday, April 6, is the deadline to turn in nomination papers for candidates for town office. You will need a minimum of 25 valid signatures. Bring them to the Edgecomb Town Clerk's Office, Monday evenings 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Offices to be voted for are: one Selectman/Assessor of Taxes/Overseer of the Poor for 3 years; one Town Clerk for 1 year; one Treasurer for 1 year, one Tax Collector for 1 year; one Road Commissioner for 1 year; one Member of the School Committee for 3 years; two Members of the Planning Board for 3 years each. Call the Town Clerk during the above hours at 882-7018 for more information.
More about Edgecomb Art: The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. has purchased a Fraas/Slade work, "Water Music...Heading Southeast," for their permanent collection. Recently installed in the Seaman's Gallery, East Hall, it will be on exhibit there through May.
Still licking maple syrup off my lips from our Maple Sunday expedition out and back to 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com. This column appears in several local papers, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
