Twelve turkeys graced our lawn the morning of Sept. 13, six heading east, five heading west, and one sitting in the pear tree.

Old Schools Parade! Everyone is welcome to the Edgecomb Historical Society's meeting Thursday, Sept. 25, at 2:00 p.m. in the Town Hall. We will show off our collection of wonderful photographs of as many one-room schools as we have been able to find, all suitably reproduced for display, and discuss our plans for mounting the display at the Edgecomb Eddy School.

Common Ground Fair this weekend! Bruce and I will be manning the Maine Cooperative booth for The Rising Tide this Saturday afternoon. It is to be located in the Agricultural area. Hope to see you all pass by!

Anyone with memories of the Edgecomb Food Buying Co-Op, back in the 1970s, please get in touch with me. The Rising Tide will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in October, and we want as many reminiscences as we can collect!

The Edgecomb Eddy School Kindergarten and First Grade are collecting box tops from any General Mills products, a Hannaford's "School Dollars" program. All the classes are collecting the General Mills "School Dollars" coupons printed on the backs of check-out tapes at any Hannaford's in the area. If you would like to help the school pay for playground equipment or special classroom items, please bring your boxtops and receipts to the school's office during school hours, or load down a kid to turn them in. Call the school, 882-1515 for more details. Once, Principal Joanne Krawic tells me, the Kindergarten/First Grade boxtop effort was able to finance a a Chewonki science presentation they shared with the whole school!

The Town Treasurer announces two deadlines: 1) Applicants for the State Amnesty Program should file before November 30. Anyone who owes unpaid income taxes may apply and pay only the taxes owed and half the interest; all fines will be forgiven. 2) The Property Tax Circuit Breaker deadline for filing is December 31. This program returns money to people who pay more than 4% of their income on real estate taxes. There is an income limit for couples and singles, but for details about either of these programs, call the Treasurer at 882-7018, or visit her during Town Office hours, Mondays 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m..

Saturday, September 27, is the date for the Edgecomb Congregational Church's next baked bean and casserole supper, to benefit the Meals on Wheels program of Senior Spectrum.

Edgecomb Cooks! Quickly pick up the phone and call Heather O'Bryan at the Damariscotta Chamber of Commerce, 563-8340, to see if you can still enter your Champion Seafood or Clam Chowder in the LORE Festival chowder contest Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at Andrews' Pine View Restaurant. You'll need to prepare a half gallon of your chowder.

On Monday, September 29, John Adams, portrayed by Edgecomb's Charles Benton, will be representing a local small landowner in an 18th-century lawsuit against the powerful Kennebec Proprietors before the actual present-day Maine Supreme Judicial Court at the Pownalborough Courthouse in Dresden. This will be the first time a case (admittedly, moot) will have been heard at the Courthouse since 1793, when, of course, the hearing body was still the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. For details, call the Lincoln County Historical Society at 882-6817. Only a handful of people will be allowed in to hear the arguments, but come all ye at 11:00 a.m. for the pomp and circumstances surrounding the arrival of Maine's Chief Justice and Associate Justices!

As I was sitting innocently at my computer composing this column, what should descend onto my lap from what high reach I can't figure out but a mouse! Small, grey, squeaking indignantly, it clung to my pantleg for a second before dropping off and scuttling somewhere else. What was it doing so high? The only thing directly above me is a ceiling fan! Mightily puzzled at 234 River Road, 633-2978, bonesukl@midcoast.com This column appears in The Boothbay Register, The Lincoln County News, The Wiscasset Newspaper, and at www.Edgecomb.org.
